On May 29, 2020, the District of Columbia (DC) construction codes were changed from the 2012 International Codes Council (ICC) code suite to the 2015 ICC codes, except for the District’s Green Code which will continue to reference the 2012 code. The District’s move to the 2015 model codes mirrors similar advancement we’ve seen in surrounding jurisdictions across the DMV region. These updates follow the logical advancement of the building codes for safety and efficiency; the changes were also deemed necessary to achieve the 2032 Goals set forth by the District outlined in the Sustainable DC Plan which include 50% renewable energy, 50% reduction in energy consumption, and 50% reduction in carbon emissions. In this session, members of the District's Technical Advisory Group for the Construction Codes will summarize the changes from this latest code issuance and how these changes affect future building design and construction in DC.

Learning Objectives: After attending this presentation, participants will be able to: Describe which parts of the DC code have changed and which have stayed the same; Describe how these changes facilitate the achieving of the 2032 Goals in the Sustainable DC plan; Identify the specific ways in which this new code adoption will affect future building design and construction; and identify the new minimum requirements for fire, life safety, structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems, as well as energy efficiency and environmental controls.
