The Greener Government Buildings Amendment Act of 2022 (GGBA) will require new construction and substantial rehab projects located in Washington DC, that are either District-owned or District-funded with allocated District dollars, after March 31, 2024, to comply with Washington DC's Appendix Z requirements. The Appendix Z of the 2017 District of Columbia Energy Conservation Code building standard will present new challenges for owners, design professionals and bring projects teams on the path to designing and building to net zero.
This course delves into the regulatory policy triggering this upcoming change, as well as the challenges and implications for development budgets, architectural, MEP, and construction. Participants will explore the multifaceted landscape of Appendix Z, discover how these requirements intertwine with sustainable design principles and resilient building strategies, reshaping the landscape of architectural practice in the nation's capital.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the key provisions and requirements outlined in Washington DC's Appendix Z, including its implications for development projects.
  • Explore the impact of Appendix Z on MEP systems design considerations, and strategies for integrating compliance seamlessly into project plans.
  • Evaluate the financial implications of Appendix Z on development budgets and timelines, identifying cost-effective approaches to compliance.
  • Develop strategies for ensuring ongoing operational compliance with Appendix Z requirements.
