Design Like a Girl, created in 2015, pairs students with women in architecture, and is open to young people between the ages of 11-13. Participants are paired with mentors from the architecture, construction, and engineering fields to learn first-hand about careers from professional women. In each themed workshop, participants will go on a local field trip and come back to the District Architecture Center to design and build a three-dimensional structure.  The four workshop dates coincide with DCPS’s no school days on Fridays.

The themes of the workshops this year:

  • October 20, 2023 - Fundamentals of Architecture
  • November 3, 2023 - Set Design in Theater
  • January 26, 2024 - Sustainability in Architecture
  • April 5, 2024 - Designing Spaces for Space (to Air & Space)

The goal of the Design Like a Girl Mentor Program is to promote diversity and inclusion within the industry. WAF hopes to open a door that might eventually lead to greater equity and representation in the profession.

Spaces are limited to 12 participants.
