Design in Action

Design in Action pairs DC Public and Charter High School students with top DC architecture firms for one week during Spring break. Started in 2012 by Janet Bloomberg, AIA of KUBE Architecture, the program has grown to include over 26 architecture firms each year. Throughout the week, students shadow architects on construction site visits, in design and client meetings, and more. Students also have the opportunity to work on their own design project that they showcase during a reception at the end of the week.

2019 Design in Action dates and application will be announced shortly

About the Program

This program introduces DC Public and Charter School 11th graders to architecture as a career during their spring break. This unparalleled experience provides an inside look at the architecture profession and connections to firms in Washington, DC. Students will have a chance to participate in a variety of experiences including:

  • Project and design sessions,
  • Design charrettes,
  • Client meetings, and
  • Construction site visits.

Students will also work on a project for which they will sketch ideas, build small study models, and get introduced to computer aided graphics software. This experience will earn 35 community service hours.

The goal of DESIGN in ACTION is to introduce high school students who show an interest for design and architecture to the creativity and passion that drives accomplished professionals. By showing students what high-quality architecture can be, and share the process that creates it hope to inspire students who would not otherwise have this opportunity to pursue their creative interests.

The provides students with inside knowledge into the architecture profession, as well as makes valuable contacts that can work with them throughout their careers. DESIGN in ACTION engages students on a practical level as they

  • practice professional / career development skills,
  • learn about a viable STEM profession,
  • achieve an accomplishment to list on their resumes and college applications.
