Please join AIA|DC for a walking lecture of historic Penn Quarter, “Washington’s Oldest New Neighborhood." The program of will highlight modern additions to the neighborhood, including recent work by award-winning firms such as Hartman-Cox Architects and Shalom Baranes Associates, as well as landmarks by John Russell Pope, FAIA, Robert Mills and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
After attending this tour, participants will be able to:
- Describe the history of the Penn Quarter neighborhood—including its importance as Center Market—to Washington, DC;
- Recount the events that led to the decline of Penn Quarter;
- Describe the role of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation in revitalizing the Penn Quarter neighborhood, and name the structure that finally made Penn Quarter the bustling neighborhood that it is today;
- Describe the role of the District Architecture Center—both to the public and to professional architects.
