Lunchtime Learning for Teens: Design Project Management with Joanna Schmickel, AIA

Introducing a new program just for teens—a one hour lecture from a design professional. Speakers will discuss their career path and share suggestions they have for students pursuing a career in the field. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of careers in design.

Presented by: Joanna Schmickel AIA, LEED AP

Joanna Schmickel is a principal at cox graae + spack architects and has been with our firm since 1986. Joanna provides leadership for projects encompassing interior design services as well as planning and design for education facilities.

In her over 28 years of design and project management experience, Joanna has developed special expertise in educational programs requiring complex phased construction. Some of Joanna’s notable projects include Upper School, Intermediate School and Lower School campuses at the Potomac School, the, US Department of Labor Potomac Job Corps Center, Hendley Elementary School and the United Institute of Peace.

Joanna received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University. She holds professional registration for District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland. Joanna is a LEED Accredited Professional and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Joanna is an active participant in various initiatives through the Washington Architectural Foundation’s Architecture in the Schools program, introducing architecture and design to inner-city students.
