About

The Design Excellence Committee is a group of architects and designers who educate, recognize and promote design excellence to Chapter members and the community. Our committee does this through events, competitions, lectures, and awards programs. We invite and encourage participation from anyone interested in the field of architecture and design, and we are constantly broadening our reach and creating new outlets to share the excellent design work of our community.

Goals

2022

  • AIA DC Chapter Awards: The goal of the Design Excellence Committee is to continue our progress in illuminating the chapter's awards programs though better recognition and celebration. With the pandemic beginning to slow, the DEC will be planning to meet the following goals, they are:
    • 2022 Chapter Awards Jury: Plan and organize an in-person jury to be held at the DAC. We will work with the DAC executive staff to help plan and organize the jurors travel and itinerary while in Washington DC.
    • Participate in presenting the award/jury guidelines and evaluation recommendations to the Chapter Awards Jury.
    • To participate in the presentation of the Jury introductions and Chapter Award
    • To work with the DAC on insuring that all Chapter Award programs include "Jury Feedback" or virtual jury roundtable.
  • Starting in 2022, our goal is to have in-person DEC monthly meetings. The meeting location will either be at the DAC (If permitted) or a designated office that can also support virtual call-in attendance.
  • Continue to support the DC Chapter in following the AIA Framework for Design Excellence goals. As we did in 2021, we will give a presentation that address the AIA Framework for Design Excellence goals and how the chapter awarding winning projects addressed these goals.
  • Continue to add more design jurors to the master jury list.
  • Design presentation to the DEC membership: "The Scale of Two Cities". The DEC committee is currently in the planning stages in preparing a lecture series designed to compare and contrast the architecture and urban planning strategies found within Washington, DC and Chicago.
  • Encourage members of the AIA I DC Board to attend and participate in Design Excellence Committee meetings
  • Continue outreach with other committees and partner with these committees on continuing education lectures or design competitions.
